Handcrafted German coachwork meets American heritage in this rare pre-war classic, now proudly displayed as part of the Ron Sturgeon Collection
FORT WORTH, TX, September 22, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ — The DFW Car & Toy Museum is thrilled to announce the newest highlight of the Ron Sturgeon Collection: a 1930 Mercedes-Benz Stuttgart 260 Roadster. With its hand-built coachwork, storied transatlantic journey, and finely engineered six-cylinder heart, this early example of automotive elegance offers a rare glimpse into Mercedes-Benz’s craftsmanship during the golden age of motoring.
Originally delivered in May 1930 to Karosseriewerk Reutter in Stuttgart, Germany—best known for its work on Porsche bodies—this Stuttgart 260 was fitted with custom roadster coachwork before being delivered to its first owner. In the 1950s, the vehicle was acquired by a U.S. Air Force medic stationed in Germany. He later imported the car to North Carolina, where it remained in the same family for decades until becoming part of the museum’s permanent display.
Under its long hood, the Mercedes is powered by a 2.6-liter L-head inline-six, equipped with a single Solex side-draft carburetor and paired to a floor-shifted, non-synchromesh three-speed manual transmission. With 50 horsepower and a seven-bearing crankshaft, the 260 Roadster offered a blend of smooth performance and luxurious touring in its time.
The cabin is equally period-authentic, featuring a wood-rimmed steering wheel and VDO instrumentation, including a 120-km/h speedometer, oil pressure and fuel gauges, and an integrated clock. Every detail speaks to the prestige of 1930s Mercedes-Benz design and engineering.
“This car represents a bridge between eras—handcrafted in Germany during the rise of automotive luxury and preserved by an American family with deep appreciation,” said Ron Sturgeon, founder of the DFW Car & Toy Museum. “We’re honored to share this extraordinary vehicle’s story with our visitors.”
The 1930 Mercedes-Benz Stuttgart 260 Roadster is now on view among more than 200 rare vehicles and over 3,000 toys and collectibles that make up the museum’s renowned collection.
